Piano Key Scales

Scales are the building blocks of melodies, chords and improvisation. Choose a key and a scale type and this keyboard lights up the notes, spells them correctly for the key (B♭ not A♯ in F major), shows the pattern of whole and half steps, and plays the scale up and down so you can hear it. The printable pack adds scale charts for all twelve keys.

How scales are built

A scale is a set of notes in order, defined by the pattern of steps between them. On a piano a half step (H) is from one key to the very next key, black or white; a whole step (W) skips one key. The major scale always follows W–W–H–W–W–W–H, which is why C major uses only white keys and every other major scale needs some black keys to keep the same pattern.

Why spelling matters

In a seven-note scale each letter name is used once. F major is F G A B♭ C D E — not A♯ — because it already has an A. Correct spelling makes sheet music easier to read and matches the key signature. The finder spells every seven-note scale letter by letter from the root; pentatonic, blues and chromatic scales use sharps in sharp keys and flats in flat keys.

How to use the scale finder

1. Choose a key and a scale type.
2. The notes light up on two octaves of keyboard; the root is red.
3. Read the note names, step pattern and — for common keys — standard fingering.
4. Press play to hear the scale up and down, and adjust the tempo.

Worked example

Choose D and Major: the keyboard highlights D, E, F♯, G, A, B and C♯, the step pattern shows W–W–H–W–W–W–H, and the fingering is right hand 1 2 3 1 2 3 4 5 and left hand 5 4 3 2 1 3 2 1. Switch to Natural minor and the notes become D E F G A B♭ C — the same notes as F major, its relative major. Choosing A and Minor pentatonic gives A C D E G, the classic scale for rock and blues solos.

Practising scales

• Start hands separately, slowly, with a metronome.
• Keep the thumb passing smoothly under the hand — no lifting the wrist.
• Play two octaves once one octave is secure.
• Practise in the circle of fifths order: C, G, D, A, E, B…
• Try different rhythms and dynamics to keep practice musical.
• Say the note names aloud to learn the key signatures.

The circle of fifths

Arrange the twelve major keys so each is a fifth above the last — C, G, D, A, E, B, F♯ — and each step adds one sharp. Going the other way — C, F, B♭, E♭, A♭, D♭, G♭ — each step adds one flat. The circle shows at a glance which keys are closely related (neighbours share all but one note), which is why songs often move to the key a fifth up or down, and why practising scales around the circle builds up key signatures one accidental at a time.

Modes in practice

Modes are the major scale started on different notes. D dorian uses the white keys from D to D; G mixolydian the white keys from G to G. Dorian gives a minor sound with a lifted sixth that is common in jazz, funk and folk; mixolydian is a major sound with a flattened seventh, heard in rock and blues; lydian’s raised fourth sounds dreamy and is popular in film music. Try playing a mode over a single held bass note to hear its character.

Relative and parallel keys

Every major key has a relative minor that shares its notes, starting on the sixth note: C major and A minor, G major and E minor. Parallel keys share the same root but different notes: C major and C minor. Understanding both helps with reading key signatures and changing key in music.
